Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in September and handed more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Background on Conviction
