The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
