British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
